Hidden City

New work by Louise West at the Modern Pantry, Clarkenwell

Last summer I began keeping a sketchbook recording London scenes exploring the idea of beauty in the ordinary and overlooked views of our ever-changing city.  I have been painting the rapidly changing skyline looking at the juxtaposition of this new cityscape and wealth overshadowing the traditional terraces and landmark buildings of London.

This new work has been inspired by the Camden Town Group, a short lived society of artists who explored new ways of representing the everyday realities of urban life in London.  Avoiding ostentation and pretension the Camden Town artists produced small scale, modestly priced paintings depicting everyday surroundings and pursuits of urban life.
